SERDANG, Sept 6 – Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) achieved the biggest leap when it went up 61 places to be among the world’s top research universities (RU), moving up from 331st last year to 270th in Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2016/2017 issued today.
This is UPM’s best ever achievement to be ranked among world’s top 300 universities since its ranking participation 10 years ago. UPM also came in second as Malaysia’s top universities compared to 5th spot last year.
Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Datin Paduka Dr. Aini Ideris said UPM’s efforts to strengthen the university fundamentals had borne fruits as shown in the latest QS ranking achievement.
The Academic Reputation indicator scored the highest in the worldwide rankings, one of the key factors that had greatly improved on UPM’s performance.
“This is in line with UPM’s vision to become a university of international repute, and this QS ranking can directly assist in evaluating UPM’s level of visibility, particularly in the aspects of teaching and learning as well as research and innovation,” she said.
She also said although UPM had met its targets, university community should not be complacent but continue to push its momentum of excellence due to stiff competition in education industry.
Prof. Datin Paduka Dr. Aini also described UPM’s latest QS achievement as double victories within one week for the university which was ranked the country’s most innovative university by Reuters Top 75: Asia’s Most Innovative Universities on August 31, based on its excellent performance in science, invention of new technologies and its assistance to drive the global economy.
Universiti Malaya climbed up the 2016/2017 QS World University Rankings from 146th last year to 133rd, Universiti Teknologi Malaysia ( went up 15 places to 288th), Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia (went up 10 places to 302rd) and Universiti Sains Malaysia (330th against 289th last year).
QS World University Ranking 2016 assessed more than 4,000 world’s leading universities based on six indicators - Academic Reputation (40%), Employer Reputation (10%), Faculty Student Ratio (20%), Citations per Faculty (20%), International Faculty (5%) and International Students (5%).
